This curious, affectionate steer was born into the dairy industry, known for its exceptionally cruel treatment of animals, which includes taking newborn calves away from their moms within hours or even minutes of birth. Male calves, who can't make milk, are either killed right away or sold for veal or beef production.
That might have been the end of Pietro's story - as it is for millions of calves every year - but a broken leg changed the course of his life.
You see, Pietro's broken leg made him "useless" to the industry, as injured animals aren't
profitable to sell. Upon hearing that Pietro would be killed, an advocate asked to take him home. A few phone calls later, we learned about Pietro and agreed to take on his care.

Pietro was also very sick with pneumonia, a bacterial infection, and gastrointestinal diseases. Thanks to the help we receive from our generous supporters, our team was able to rush him in for veterinary treatment.
Pietro's doctors put a cast on his leg and ordered fluids, electrolytes, and antibiotics. At first, Pietro lacked an appetite and energy. Eventually, his condition stabilized: His eyes lit up and he began to gulp his milk with gusto!
He learned to stand using his cast for support. Then, he started bouncing whenever we approached. In time, he could walk (and run) on his own. His leg has since healed completely - it's as if he never broke it at all!
Pietro came to us in critical condition, but because kindhearted people like you stepped in to help, this resilient steer is now thriving at the sanctuary.
