Make room for bold new reporting: join us tomorrow as we raise support for gender and identity coverage.
Dear Reader,

For some people, gender and identity may seem like nebulous concepts, not worth examining. Maybe even irrelevant. Some may scoff, what does identity have to do with the realities of day-to-day life? But at PublicSource, we think the answer is — it has quite a lot to do with it.

For us, thinking about gender and identity brings up a lot of very concrete questions. How does your gender and/or identity affect your income? Your sense of safety, physically and legally, as you move through the world? What responsibilities and expectations you accept… or reject? Your chances of being elected, or promoted? What rooms, streets, and neighborhoods you feel welcome in? How (and whether) you parent? We believe these are all questions that are worth asking, and tomorrow, you have a special opportunity to affirm that these are questions that matter to you as well.

We’ve been wanting to devote coverage to these important issues for some time. When we created Selves ([link removed]) , our new weekly newsletter covering gender and identity issues in our region, it was a risk. We didn’t have a special line in our budget or a large gift lined up to cover its costs. But we’re in the practice of taking (responsible) risks and laying out new paths for local journalism. We knew this reporting needed to exist, and decided that this was the moment to commit to it.

We believe this is reporting Pittsburghers want and need, but it’ll take the support of our readers to keep producing it. For the first time ever, we’re holding a one-day only event raising funds specifically for this coverage. We hope you’ll make a gift tomorrow, and help make room to explore identity in the Pittsburgh region. If you agree that this opportunity is too important to miss, just click the button below, and we’ll make sure you get a reminder.

Remind me to make a gift in support of gender and identity reporting tomorrow! (mailto:[email protected]?subject=Remind%20me%20tomorrow!&body=I%20want%20to%20support%20gender%20and%20identity%20reporting.)
Thank you for your readership and support.

Sincerely,

Halle Stockton
