Congressman Al Green Votes for Bipartisan Gun Safety Legislation
(Houston, TX) — On Saturday, June 25, 2022, Congressman Al Green (TX-09) released the following statement:
“Yesterday I cast my vote for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a bill that will help save lives. This bill’s provisions include longer and enhanced background checks for gun buyers under the age of 21. It also closes the ‘boyfriend loophole’ by making convicted domestic violence abusers who are married—as well as those who are in serious dating relationships—ineligible to own a gun. It establishes a federal fund to incentivize states to create red flag laws, toughens federal licensing requirements for firearm dealers, invests in programs to improve school safety, as well as expands access to mental health and behavioral services.”
“According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2020 there were over 45,000 firearm-related deaths in the United States—the equivalent of about 124 deaths from firearm-related injuries per day. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is a meaningful legislative package that takes steps to help lower the number of fatalities and injuries. I remain committed to voting for future lifesaving legislation that may be presented as I continue working to keep guns out of dangerous hands.”
