Friend,
The U.S. Supreme Court just stripped women of their freedom to make their own private and personal healthcare decisions – and they handed that power to the government. American women no longer have the same control over their bodies as American men.
Forgive me for being dire, Friend, but if conservative justices on the Supreme Court have their way, this is only the beginning.
The concurring dissent from right-wing Justice Clarence Thomas should be a clarion call to Americans everywhere: He said the Supreme Court should also reconsider the rulings that protect contraception, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage.
In America, a woman now has no federal right to decide when and whether to bear children – and in the near future, the private and personal decisions of when to start a family or whom to love and marry may also be dictated by conservatives zealots in government.
Yesterday’s ruling overturning Roe v. Wade is not a sudden, conservative-led action. This is the result of a decades-long, coordinated effort on the part of the Republican Party to usurp control of our most personal freedoms. They achieved it by building political power, and they will usher in even greater harm if they take back Senate control: Mitch McConnell has already indicated that a national ban on abortion is on the table. He has already said he will block all nominations of justices to the Supreme Court for the remainder of the Biden presidency.
Yesterday, President Biden spoke to the American people and said, “Personal freedoms are on the ballot. The right to liberty, privacy, equality – they are all on the ballot.” I’m asking you to heed his call. I’m asking you to prevent an anti-woman, anti-equality Republican Party from taking back control of Washington. Please, make a grassroots contribution of whatever you can spare right now, and your support will go toward protecting this must-win Senate seat in Connecticut, and to ensuring Senate control stays with Democrats. At moments like this, it is beyond urgent that top Democrats like you dig deep and give whatever you can to fight back.
You have my word, Friend: I remain committed to doing whatever it takes to protect every American’s right to decide whether and when to have children. I co-authored the Women’s Health Protection Act, and led the effort to codify Roe’s protections into federal law in the Senate, and I will not give up. We must all fight together now to protect our freedom as Americans. Thank you for fighting alongside me and doing your part.
