Setting the record straight

Dear John,

Once again, the Washington Post got it wrong on Social Security! There is no basis for The Washington Post's claim that fixing Social Security is “on just about no one’s to-do list in Washington” [“The Medicare and Social Security disaster,” editorial, June 5].

How about the chair of the House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee, U.S. Representative John Larson (CT-01), who has introduced the "Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust Act," a bill to extend the solvency of the Social Security Trust Fund by asking the wealthy to contribute their fair share in payroll taxes?

This historic bill also increases benefits across-the-board, provides a fairer and more accurate Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), and improves survivor’s benefits, among many other important provisions.

And the “Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust Act” has more than 200 cosponsors! That’s hardly “no one,” though it is true that no Republicans have stepped forward to support this common-sense bill that will set Social Security on a course of financial solvency for years to come.

But we need more lawmakers on board this bill so that we can get it to the House floor for a much-anticipated vote in July. That’s why the National Committee has launched an emergency, highly focused campaign on Capitol Hill urging lawmakers who have yet to cosponsor the “Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust Act” to do so immediately.

During this critical election season, it’s time lawmakers GO ON THE RECORD about where they stand on this top priority of senior Americans like you …

It’s also time for the media to re-evaluate the way it covers Social Security — they could start with the truth!

Sincerely,

Max Richtman
