The Supreme Court just struck down Roe v. Wade, saying that Americans do not have a constitutional right to an abortion.

As a physician who has sat by the bedsides of patients who are seeking abortion care, I can tell you without hesitation that this will cost lives. Pregnant people living in states with extreme bans on abortion rights will be forced to give birth. Others will face the same fate if anti-abortion extremists in other states have their way.

But our fight isn't over.

The U.S. Senate must codify abortion rights into law and we must commit to electing U.S. Senators who will fight for these rights. And here in Pennsylvania, where people can still legally seek an abortion, we must defend their rights.

If Republican legislators like Doug Mastriano hadn't been stopped by Governor Wolf and Democrats like me, Pennsylvania would have already passed the most extreme anti-abortion laws in the country. We need Josh Shapiro in the governor’s office to protect Pennsylvanians’ right to an abortion.

And we must elect more Democratic Senators who will stand up for abortion rights in the Senate and codify this into law for all Americans. Once and for all. To do that, we must elect John Fetterman to the Senate this November to defend reproductive justice.

There's no question that this is a dark day. And for many of us, while we are distraught and saddened by this ruling we also aren’t surprised. We’ve known this was the outcome Republicans have been working towards and now we have to fight back.

There's never been a more important time to take action and elect leaders who will fight for our rights. Both of these races are extremely competitive, and every dollar is crucial to determining our future.
