With yesterday’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, it’s clearer now more than ever before that we must expand the broken, stolen, and illegitimate Supreme Court of the United States.

The overturn of Roe v. Wade was the result of decades of Republicans politicizing, delegitimizing, and hijacking the judicial system of our country, and the way we repair that damage is very straightforward.

In April 2021, I was proud to introduce the Judiciary Act, legislation that would add four more justices to the Supreme Court in response to years of unprecedented Republican overreach.

The fact of the matter is that the Supreme Court having 9 justices is not outlined in the Constitution. It’s entirely up to Congress to set the number of seats.

If we expand the Court so that President Joe Biden can appoint four new justices, we can begin to undo the damage that Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, and the right-wing Republican Party have done to this country.

We can start to make progress and defend the issues that matter to our movement — not just abortion or gun safety, but voting rights, environmental justice, civil rights, and so much more.

Yesterday’s decision not only dismantled the right to an abortion, it attacked the foundational right to privacy that Roe v. Wade rested upon. As Justice Clarence Thomas outlined in the decision, the Court rulings that protect contraception, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage could soon be under attack, too.

Expanding the Court is supported by the vast majority of Democrats and a plurality of voters across the country. It’s the right thing to do, it is popular, and it is urgently necessary.

Senate Democrats have the ability to expand the Court right now — but unfortunately as we’ve seen over the past two years, even when a solution is simple, it is not always easy. That’s why I’m asking you to make your voice heard, especially today:

Add your name to my petition: We must expand the Supreme Court of the United States and begin taking steps toward securing justice for all.

We cannot allow the far-right to have the last word and continue using the Supreme Court to dismantle every right and freedom we have. We must fight back.
