Hi there,
Yesterday, we heard the most damning decision from the Supreme Court. Roe v. Wade, which has been settled law for nearly 50 years, has been overturned. Abortion access is now left to the states to decide, with 13 states already enacting so-called trigger laws, which point blank outlaw abortion, regardless of the fetus’ viability or the mother’s health. This decision, which should be left to a woman and her doctor, has been stolen from millions of people by a conservative, extremist, court and is not representative of what the country wants.
I don’t say that to scare anyone, but to realistically say where we’re at as a country. Now is not the time to despair, but to make a plan for action. We are each able to fight back against this decision.
The number one thing we can do is to vote for pro-choice Democrats at every level of government. I know you’re tired of hearing the same refrain of “NOW is the most important time to vote”, but now that abortion access is left to decide, it’s absolutely vital that we keep and expand pro-choice majorities in ever state, local, and federal office.
(Here in Illinois, we have an important primary coming up, you can find your polling location and voting information here: https://ova.elections.il.gov/).
Last night I had the honor of speaking at the Roe Rally in Downtown Rock Island.
The second thing we can do is to support abortion funds. Abortion funds are closely involved in their local communities and provide logistical, financial, and emotional support to people seeking abortions. Abortion access is protected here in Illinois, but we can expect to see an influx of out-of-state visitors as they come from states that have outlawed abortions. Donating to your local abortion fund will allow them to continue to provide this much-needed support.
Watching the news this week has been hard, but our work is far from done. There is still much we can do to protect reproductive rights.
