News from Representative Himes

Dear Friends,

This is a frightening and dark moment for our country. Today, the Supreme Court has unconscionably stripped American women of the most basic freedom: to control their own bodies, healthcare, and future. Access to abortion is a fundamental human right. Now, more than 36 million women across 28 states are poised to lose access to essential healthcare services. 13 states have trigger laws that will automatically ban abortion after today’s ruling – these have already gone into effect.

Make no mistake, we are going back in time and dismantling basic rights that have been upheld for generations. I stood with women across Fairfield County as they organized and demonstrated to preserve their basic rights. I stood with my wife and daughters in our hometown as they held signs with the words “My Body My Choice”. To say these women are disappointed, angry, and outraged is a gross understatement.

Connecticut’s laws protecting a woman’s right to choose are among the nation’s strongest, but all Americans are entitled to control their own bodies and lives. Access to basic healthcare should not be determined by zip code or economic status.

We know that those who undermine and remove freedoms and liberties enshrined in our Constitution are not guided by American principles, but by personal creeds.

We will continue to stand up to those who try to eradicate established human rights. There is too much on the line to leave to chance: the right to vote, to control our own bodies, or to marry who we love are freedoms in peril. I will keep fighting in Congress to protect the right to determine your own destiny and codify Roe v. Wade into law. We must not go back.

Sincerely,

Jim
