John,
Forty nine years of the constitutional right to an abortion in this country ended today.
The ultra-conservative majority on the Supreme Court just struck down Roe v. Wade. We knew this was coming. But nothing could prepare us for what today feels like.
And the blame does not just lie with five conservative extremists on the court. Congress had DECADES to act. Democratic majorities and supermajorities came and went. They did nothing. They played politics with our lives and our bodies.
As if our right to bodily autonomy shouldn’t be the bare minimum. As if it wasn’t worth taking decisive action to protect.
When we warned them that this day would come, they called us hysterical. When we fought, hard, to stop the appointment of ANOTHER Supreme Court justice who was credibly accused of sexual assault, they called us uncivil. When we said we needed legislative action NOW, they called us impractical.
Every emotion you feel right now is valid. We are in a bleak moment in our history. But know this: you are not alone. You are backed by millions of women and allies across this country. Together, we will say in one voice: We demand better. We demand action.
We demand:
Today will be tough. But we are prepared. We are ready for the fight.
And we need you. We need every voice to be heard in the streets and in the halls of Congress. Help us give our rage a voice so powerful they cannot ignore it. Help us build our movement and show them we will never go back.
The only way we lose is if we do not act. Welcome to the Summer of Rage.
See you out there,
Rachel Carmona
