John,
Today’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade will cause irreparable harm to all who need access to safe reproductive health and abortion services. This decision was made by an extreme right wing court and does not reflect the beliefs of the vast majority of Americans.
In Illinois, reproductive rights and abortion access will remain uninfringed. We passed the Reproductive Health Act and codified reproductive rights into state law for a moment like this. We took this threat seriously and legislated accordingly , but we can’t stop there. The state legislature must continue to act and make Illinois a safe haven in the midwest where all who need access to reproductive health services can access them with no impediments. We have led before on this issue and we must lead now.
Nationally, I implore our Democratic leadership to reflect on how we got to this place and the actions we must take to change course. The radical right is fighting a war against our rights in DC. We need principled and unwavering champions in Congress who are going to fight back against these attacks, not “pragmatists” ready to negotiate our rights if it's politically expedient.
I am thinking of everyone who will be harmed by this decision and my responsibility to stand up and fight back. I see you. I hear you. I am deeply sad and angry but as activist Mariame Kaba will say, “let this moment radicalize you, rather than leave you to despair."
I will never stop fighting with you to protect our bodily autonomy.
In solidarity,
Delia Ramirez
