The Supreme Court of the United States overturned Roe v. Wade after a draft opinion was leaked earlier this year, warning us this fateful day was near.
Abortion is no longer protected nationwide. Here’s what this means for Michigan:
Michigan was expected to immediately revert back to a 1931 law that criminalizes abortion, makes felons out of reproductive health care providers, and provides no exceptions for rape or incest.
However, Governor Gretchen Whitmer took proactive steps following the leaked decision. She immediately filed a lawsuit against this old state law to protect abortion rights in Michigan. Planned Parenthood also sued.
A Michigan judge heard us all and filed a preliminary injunction to stop the 1931 law from going into effect, but this fight is not over.
We cannot stop until this 1931 anti-abortion law is fully blocked in our state, and Michigan Democrats are ready to get the job done. We need to reelect Governor Whitmer and flip our state legislature blue this November.
