Skagit County Heat Advisory in Effect Through Monday, June 27
The National Weather Service issued a Heat Advisory for Skagit County and the surrounding region from 12:00 PM (noon) on Saturday, June 25 through Monday, June 27 at 11:00 PM. Hot conditions with high temperatures in the mid to upper 80s are forecasted for Saturday, and low 90s on Sunday and Monday. Overnight low temperatures will likely only cool into the low 60s for many locations Saturday night and again Sunday night.
During this time, there is expected to be a moderate risk for those that are sensitive to heat, including seniors, infants, pregnant individuals, and those with existing medical conditions. Also vulnerable are individuals and households without access to effective cooling or hydration.
?This weekend, take a moment to check in on your neighbors?especially if they are elderly or have a medical condition that may make them susceptible to heat related illness,? said Julie de Losada, Public Health Emergency Preparedness & Response Manager. ?Last year, Skagit County lost six lives during the June heat wave. We can work together to avoid a similar situation this summer.?
Some safety tips to keep in mind this weekend:
* Stay hydrated.
* Do not leave your children and pets in the car. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
* Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
* Practice water safety and always keep an eye on children around water, including inflatable backyard pools.
* Rivers and lakes are expected to stay cool over the weekend, increasing the potential for drowning risk. Cold water shock can lead to life-threatening hypothermia within minutes. Use extreme caution if recreating near water, wear a life jacket, and supervise children closely.
* Stay vigilant to keep fire risk low (Don't throw cigarettes out windows or drive on dry grass)

* Anacortes Library: Friday 10AM-6PM, Saturday 10AM-4PM
* Burlington Public Library: Friday & Saturday 10:00 AM ? 5:00 PM
* Mount Vernon Library: Friday 10AM-6PM; Saturday 10AM-4PM
* Upper Skagit Library: Friday & Saturday 10AM-5PM
* Maiben Park (Burlington) and Kiwanis (Mount Vernon) Spray Parks will also be open throughout the weekend.
