Press Release: Rep. Loudermilk: On Supreme Court Returning Power Over Abortion Laws to the American People

Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled 6-3 to uphold a 2018 Mississippi law banning most abortion procedures after fifteen weeks of pregnancy.
The case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, has received national attention because many legal experts believe Dobbs will be used as a vehicle to challenge Planned Parenthood v. Casey and Roe v. Wade – two cases which ruled on a supposed ‘right’ to have an abortion.
“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court confirms what has been true all along: there is no constitutional right to an abortion. This decision by the Supreme Court upholds the original intent of the Constitution, by limiting the federal government’s authority to only the powers enumerated in the Constitution. This decision effectively returns the power to decide abortion policy back to where it was intended to reside, with the American people and their state governments. As a result of this decision, voters will now have the ability to decide whether to save the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent children in their states, or to allow for abortion, and to what degree.

The White House and its allies are circulating a misleading talking point that the Biden administration is overseeing the most oil production in U.S. history.
The claim from Democrats that domestic production is higher now than during the Trump administration is based on a comparison of four-year averages that includes the tremendous drop in economic activity at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Domestic oil production under Biden has yet to come close to the pre-pandemic levels reached under the prior administration, a more detailed Free Beacon analysis found.

The Supreme Court overturned a Maine law Tuesday that blocks religious schools from receiving state tuition assistance allocated for private institutions, claiming it “penalizes the free exercise” of religion in the state.
Writing for a 6-3 majority in the case of Carson v. Makin, Chief Justice John Roberts stated that Maine’s tuition scholarship program — which pays for some students to attend “nonsectarian” private schools when there are no public schools in their communities — “operates to identify and exclude otherwise eligible schools on the basis of their religious exercise.”

The Supreme Court Thursday ruled 6-3 that New York’s regulations that made it difficult to obtain a license to carry a concealed handgun were unconstitutionally restrictive, and that it should be easier to obtain such a license.
The existing standard required an applicant to show "proper cause" for seeking a license, and allowed New York officials to exercise discretion in determining whether a person has shown a good enough reason for needing to carry a firearm. Stating that one wished to protect themselves or their property was not enough.
