Giving a Voice to the Unborn

Every unborn child is a gift from God and worthy of protection. We applaud the historic U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization which will save countless innocent lives, and return the power to protect the unborn to the people and their elected representatives.

This week, the House Armed Services Committee passed the Fiscal Year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) by a vote of 57 - 1. More than 70 proposals from our office were included in the final passage of the NDAA out of the Committee. Passage moves this process forward to ensure our warfighters have all the tools and resources they need to defend America and keep us safe.

Mississippians and scores of Americans are struggling with inflation, record gas prices, and continuous disruptions in the supply chain. We have listened to your concerns via phone calls, emails, and letters. We live in the greatest Nation on earth and there is absolutely no reason Americans should be made to suffer under the oppressive policies forced on them by this Administration. Recently, the House Budget Committee, of which I am a member, held a hearing titled "How the American Rescue Plan Saved Lives and the U.S. Economy." Witnesses included Stephen Moore, Chair of the Save America Coalition, America First Policy Institute, and Distinguished Fellow in Economics, Heritage Foundation. duane and seth steadham: desoto county farmers

This year is going to be a challenging one for Duane and Seth Steadham. The Steadham family has been farming since Duane's father, Ray Steadham, bought this land in DeSoto County in 1957. As with any farm operation, there are good and lean years, but nothing quite like this season. Fertilizer prices and other inputs have skyrocketed for the father-son farming team. Seth said some chemicals have jumped in price by 300 percent. Additionally, the disruption of the supply chain has made it difficult to find some parts for their machinery which delayed their planting season. Despite tremendous obstacles, the family is determined to move forward with high hopes for a return on their investment.

I joined my colleagues in a letter to President Biden urging the Administration to address this crisis. It is vital that we rely on America's energy sources to give our farmers a fighting chance to produce healthy crops without breaking the bank. Please click to read the letter. This week, it was an honor to recognize eight outstanding students from Mississippi's First Congressional District who have been appointed to attend a federal Service Academy. Every year, numerous young people seek a nomination through our office. Each student has devoted themselves to their studies, extracurricular activities, and to community service. I am thankful for these patriotic young people who have worked hard to become the best and brightest. This experience will prepare them to serve as officers in the United States Armed Forces. congratulations to 2lt landon long!

I am pleased to congratulate 2LT Landon Long, a 2022 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 2018, Landon graduated from Tupelo High School and departed for West Point, New York. Over the course of four years, Landon worked tirelessly to achieve excellence in academics while building leadership skills to prepare him for service as an officer in the United States Army.

"It was much harder than I ever expected," 2LT Long said. "The people I met from all over the world meant the world to me. It was because of them that I survived a trial."

This week, I formally congratulated this outstanding officer for all that he has achieved. Landon was on hand to offer guidance to members of the class of 2026 Service Academy appointees from Mississippi's First Congressional District.

Welcome to summer intern Grace Troutman! The New Orleans native is a student at Mississippi State University majoring in Psychology with minors in Political Science and Spanish. She is involved in the Student Association Senate, Stennis-Montgomery Association (President), Phi Beta Kappa, Psi Chi, and Shackouls Honors College. Grace's parents are John and Anne Troutman.

"I wanted to intern because I have always had a great passion for policy and government, and I knew working on the Hill would be an exceptional way to immerse myself in the legislative process," Grace said.
