DENNIS L. BAKER FOR U.S. SENATE

Like you, I am upset about this morning’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Most Americans support the protections of Roe v. Wade, but a radically conservative Supreme Court reduced half the population to second-class citizens and took away their constitutional right to privacy. In Oklahoma, the impact is immediate due to our “trigger law, passed in anticipation that Roe v. Wade would be overturned.

Americans are worried that, without their constitutional right to privacy, other rights such as same sex marriage and access to birth control will be vulnerable to legal challenge and targeted next.

Pregnancy is expensive and it is not always safe. America has one of the highest maternal mortality rates of all wealthy countries and poor or minority women are at the highest risk. The government has no business forcing people to risk their lives for the sake of politics.

About 75% of those who seek an abortion are either low-income or below the poverty line. Republicans like Senator Lankford could have worked on improving people’s financial and healthcare stability. Instead, Lankford has done his level best to make life harder for regular Oklahomans. He fought against the right to access birth control. He doesn’t support universal access to healthcare, parental leave, affordable childcare, access to mental health support for parents, or making schools safer for students. He doesn’t even support the “Keep Kids Fed” act which would continue to provide free meals for students in schools.

I support all of those things that Senator Lankford opposes. There is no justification for hard-working people to not be paid a living wage while corporate profits soar. No hard working Oklahoman should have to live with the anxiety and financial insecurity of living paycheck to paycheck. I believe that equality under the law matters and that treating one category of people differently than those in other categories violates that principle. I believe all people should be able to make decisions about what they do with their own body. That’s why I will vote YES on the Women’s Healthcare Protection Act. It’s why I will push for other laws that protect your privacy.

I need your help to get to D.C. and do that, which is why if you’re a Democrat or Independent I’m asking for your vote in Tuesday’s primary. This attack on our liberty and our lives cannot be allowed to succeed, but it will take all of us working together to push it back.
