[1]NNU - Medicare for All!

The Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade today is a shameful and
dangerous assault on women, other child-bearing people, and families at a
sweeping scale. [ [link removed] ]You can read NNU’s full statement on today’s decision
here.

This decision is part of a coordinated right wing effort to undo hard-won
human and civil rights in the United States and to control working people
by removing their power and bodily autonomy. This decision goes against
the beliefs and values of the vast majority of people in the United States
and is an attack on democracy itself.

This denial of health care will most violently harm and deepen existing
inequalities for low-income people and people who already suffer from lack
of and inadequate health care, such as Black, Latinx, and immigrant women.
Today’s decision is an all-out attack on working people, and we must fight
back immediately to restore this basic right.

Nurses will not tolerate these assaults. We will continue to act in
solidarity with our coworkers, our patients, and our communities to defend
the human rights that workers have fought for and won over centuries of
struggle in the United States.

printable “Abortion is health care” placard to display in your yard or
window or to bring to a protest tonight.

Together, we will continue our relentless fight for social, political, and
economic justice by working to create an equitable and high-quality health
care system.

We know that under Medicare for All, the cost of abortion care would be
covered. Medicare for All legislation in the House and Senate as written
would prohibit the Hyde Amendment, which restricts federal funds from
being spent on abortion, from applying to Medicare for All funds. Passing
Medicare for All would allow abortion to be included as part of
guaranteed, comprehensive health care for all people under the program.

However, we must be clear -- the Supreme Court’s decision today to
overturn Roe vs. Wade, which will trigger abortion bans in over a dozen
states, would still hold under Medicare for All. Even if we were to pass
Medicare for All, the coverage of abortion care may not matter in states
where it is illegal unless clear federal statutory protections for
abortion care are also passed.

As we fight back against these attacks, we must also continue the work to
realize our vision for a just, equitable future – one where where abortion
care is not only legal, but the cost is covered and guaranteed under
Medicare for All.

There is only one choice for us: to join in community and to take
collective action to secure the future we all deserve.

In solidarity,

Nurses’ Campaign to Win Medicare for All
