Early this morning, the United Supreme Court voted in a 6-3 ruling to strike down Roe v. Wade, overturning the landmark precedent guaranteeing a woman's right to an abortion. Basic access to reproductive healthcare for millions of women is now in peril in states across the country.
This means that women have officially lost their constitutional right to choose whether or not they want to carry a child.
State legislatures who have spent decades preparing for this day will now launch and implement pre-prepared legislation to permanently ban the practice of abortion as well as prevent any access to abortion. Women who obtain abortions in these states, and the doctors who perform them, will now likely face criminal penalties and even prosecution and imprisonment.
While reproductive freedoms in Colorado remain safe—for now—many like our opponent Congressman Ken Buck (R-CO), are dead set on changing this. Congressman Ken Buck, in his own words, states:
"I don't believe in the exceptions of rape or incest. I believe that the only exception, I guess, is life of the mother."
Here’s what Buck had to say this morning in his press release about the court's verdict.
Disgusting.
Over 51% of Congressman Buck’s constituents are women who just lost one of their inalienable rights. His disservice and disdain for his female constituents makes him beyond unqualified to hold office. It’s up to us to get rid of him.
The votes we need to beat Congressman Buck are already here in this district and they are within our grasp. When we challenged Buck in 2020, we increased Democratic voter turnout significantly, receiving more than 173,000 votes in November 2020, more than any Democrat since the district was gerrymandered.
Do not get discouraged. The fight for reproductive justice is just getting started and we will use this dark moment to galvanize our movement and fight that much harder.
Yours in the fight,
