I am heartbroken. I am angry. I am activated.
The decision made by the Supreme Court today is an attack on everyone, not just those of us who lost our bodily autonomy today.
I am relieved and proud that as a freshman legislator in 2019, I signed onto the Reproductive Health Act and worked to codify Roe in New York State to defend against this exact scenario, but we know attacks on Roe are just the beginning.
I am also proud of the work we’ve done in the past few weeks to pass comprehensive legislation to ensure reproductive healthcare is protected in New York, including prohibiting medical misconduct charges for performing reproductive health care, prohibiting medical malpractice insurers from taking action against healthcare providers performing legal abortions, and prohibiting New York State from participating in out-of-state cases involving abortion.
We must also pass the Abortion Access Fund Bill, and work to protect other liberties at risk from far-right attacks, like LGBTQ & interracial marriage.
The impact this decision will have across the country and in our own state will be felt for years to come, as states like New York will be overrun with out-of-state patients seeking reproductive healthcare and support. We must be ready to lift them up, provide needed resources and fight against these injustices to the bodies of those under attack.
It is time to act, stand up for reproductive justice, and show the courts that we will not back down. Here is how you can get involved:
