Today the Supreme Court has failed us by ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade, removing the constitutional right to abortion that has stood for nearly 50 years. This dangerous decision has opened the floodgates by allowing states across the country to ban abortion. At this moment we know that 26 states are poised to ban abortion which will leave 36 million people who can become pregnant without access to essential care in their home state. We’ve already seen many states pass abortion bans. In some states, politicians will use this ruling to enact new abortion bans, while in other states, old bans will take effect.
While we are enraged by this decision, we want to assure you that abortion is still legal in DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
We are not surprised by this ruling. Politicians have been systematically taking away access to abortion one state at a time. We have already seen the impacts of abortion bans in states like Texas where the Supreme Court allowed a law to stand that bans abortion at six-weeks, long before most people know they are pregnant. The ruling today will begin a ripple effect that will disproportionately hurt Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and other people of color, especially those with low-incomes in rural areas.
This is far from over. Planned Parenthood Advocates for DC, Maryland, & NoVa will continue to defend the rights of people seeking reproductive health care, especially abortion. We will fight like hell to make sure everyone has the care they need to control their bodies and their futures. That means that no politicians should be involved in personal medical decisions. Together we have the power to stand up against abortion bans and reclaim our rights.
We understand that this is an emotional time and we encourage you to channel that energy as we continue this fight together. Join us today in DC, Baltimore, Annapolis, and Frederick for Bans Off Our Bodies Rallies.
With gratitude,
Betsy Harned
