Friend:
The sleeper cell of American Fascism has now awoken. There is a well funded, well organized group of regressive nationalists that is working hard to turn back the clock on America. We cannot cede an inch to them and we must do everything in our power to take back what they have stolen.
Today, millions of women have been told by six unelected judges (or let’s call them what they are: terrorists masquerading as judges) that their bodies do not belong to them.
This decision will have a profound and immediate effect on the lives and health of women across the county.
This court’s decision to trample on nearly 50 years of constitutional precedent, and to put women, health care providers, and families in dire danger, is something we knew was coming and prepared for, but is remarkable nonetheless because of what else it means for other fundamental rights as well.
Justice Thomas wrote that in the future, the high court should “reconsider” a number of other key rulings, including landmark decisions like Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell that grant a right to contraception, love whomever you choose, and same-sex marriage.
We cannot let today’s decision cause a domino effect on every other right we have fought so hard for.
The fact that Justice Thomas’s atrocious statement is being announced during Pride month should only drive us to fight harder to protect the rights we have fought hard for. These lawless and extreme hits to our humanity must not continue.
In 2019, we took action to define abortion as healthcare in New York State. We enshrined the right to one in our state’s laws and protections, and have continued to pass legislation to further protect reproductive health access. I remain committed to fighting like hell to do whatever we can here, as a state, to protect patients who receive abortion care and medical professionals who provide it — no matter how far they have travelled to reach New York.
And I will of course remain committed to standing up for other rights we fought hard for: the right to marriage equality, the right to love whomever you choose, the right to access contraception, and so much more.
I will be in Washington Square tonight, marching in solidarity with the thousands of others who refuse to surrender their rights to an out of touch court that believes women are meant to be separate, unequal, and subservient. Tomorrow, I will be protesting outside our Congressional representative’s office. I hope to see you there
Never giving up,
