Friends, in heartbreaking news the Supreme Court strikes down 50 years of judicial precedent and overturns Roe v Wade.
Let’s be clear about how extreme and unprecedented this is: An unelected body of judges overturned a federal policy that 64% of Americans agree should stand. An insurrectionist sympathizer, Clarence Thomas, and right-wing judges handpicked by Donald Trump, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett are putting their extremist agenda over one of our most fundamental rights.
Whatever you are feeling today, whether it’s rage, despair, or grief, all of those feelings are valid. We won’t back down in this fight. We WILL reclaim this freedom. We CAN do this by defending and expanding the Democratic Majority in both chambers of Congress and codify Roe into federal law. But that starts with you. Will you chip in a few dollars to help us ensure we can elect more pro-choice Democrats today?
Extremists in state legislatures are waiting in the wings to enact policy that would effectively wipe out abortion access in the South and Midwest. In Oklahoma, they passed the nation’s most extreme abortion ban, which will lead to surveillance and criminalization of pregnancy loss. Thirteen states have laws on the books to ban access to clinical abortion care and that number is likely to rise.
This is a continuation of the hate and venom spewed by the Republican Party. They’ve made it no secret that the anti-abortion movement has its roots in white supremacy and the desire to strip away autonomy from the most marginalized.
I know not everyone wants to chip into political campaigns after this kind of news, so you can join me and others in supporting abortion funds in your state or in one of the thirteen states where access to clinical abortion will be banned. Abortion funds are experts at navigating obstacles, but they need our help to fund their work.
Abortion funds are our future. They provide practical support for funds, travel, childcare, and doula and emotional support. Activists and leaders have been preparing this infrastructure for years as more restrictive bills have created more barriers to access. Now, their work is even more vital as abortion rights go to the states.
This fight is far from over and we are so grateful to have you on our side.
– Eric
