Say NO to Signature Verification

The NC Republican Party is demanding that the NC State Board of Elections violate its standards and toss out legitimate mail-in ballots in the upcoming midterm election. The county board of elections officials already verify signatures by requiring two witnesses on mail-in ballots. The Republican party wants signature matching in NC- it is unreliable and another form of voter suppression that makes big impacts on vulnerable communities. Please make your voice heard and make public comments until Tuesday, July 5 through the NC State Board of Elections.

July 26, 2022 Election

The May primary resulted in some run off elections and some municipalities have a general election on July 26. This will not be a high turn out election unless we organize and get people to the polls! See the final municipalities and counties that have elections below:

General Municipal Elections: Charlotte, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Hickory, Mooresville and Sanford

Municipal Run Off Elections: Cary, New Bern, Rocky Mount, Statesville

Board of Education Run Off Elections: Franklin County, Jackson County District 2

Sheriff Second Primary (This happens when no candidate exceeds the 30% threshold): Graham County Sheriff (Republican), Wake County Sheriff (Democratic)

Important Dates to Know:

Mail In Ballot Portal Open Now!
June 26 - Mail-In Ballots will start to be mailed out 
July 1 - Voter Registration Deadline to vote on July 26
July 7 - Early Voting/Same Day Registration Starts (Check your county board of elections website for locations and hours)
July 19 - Deadline to request a mail-in ballot
July 23 - Early Voting/Same Day Registration Ends
July 26 - Election Day and all mail-in ballots must be postmarked by July 26

Carolyn Coleman Week of Peace

We're excited to take part in a week of peace in Greensboro for July 11 - 16 to honor the late civil rights icon Carolyn Coleman. 

Carolyn Coleman passed away earlier this year and was a big part of the NAACP over the last 30 years.

Join Gate City Coalition and One Step Further to take action, serve the community and have some fun.

Recent SCOTUS Rulings

The Supreme Court of the United States has been releasing rulings from cases that they heard earlier this year and late last year. We're still awaiting the Dobbs rulings (as of finishing this email Friday 6/24 before 10AM), but in the meantime here's a quick rundown of some of the cases released in the last week:

1. Dobbs v. Jackson - Overrules Roe v. Wade and returns the decisions back to the states
2. NRA v. Bruen- SCOTUS effectively de-regulates guns and rules that gun restrictions are unconstitutional.
3. Berger v. NC NAACP - SCOTUS rules that NC Republicans are allowed to intervene in a case challenging North Carolina’s voter ID law. Currently Attorney General Josh Stein is challenging the case that has been juggled around multiple courts in NC. 
4. Vega v. Tekoh - SCOTUS chips away at Miranda Rights and rules that people that have been arrested do not have grounds to sue police officers.
5. Carson v. Makin - With the SCOTUS' decision, taxpayers will be forced to pay for private schools run by religious organizations in many states. 
6. Marietta Memorial Hospital v. DaVita - The SCOTUS ruling says that health insurance companies can limit paying for outpatient dialysis for patients in late-stage renal disease. 
7. Shoop v. Twyford - SCOTUS reverses an order that allowed incarcerated people on death row to search for new evidence that would help show that their sentences were unconstitutional. 
8. George v. McDonough - SCOTUS rules that veterans cannot challenge a denial of benefits due to a legal error.
9. Viking River Cruises, Inc v. Moriana - the court rules that the Federal Arbitration Act of 1925 preempts a California ruling that allowed workers to hold employers accountable for workplace-wide violations before judges and juries. This gives more power to corporations rather than to workers.
