Dear John, As you may have heard, the U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade. Abortion is still legal in Virginia. We at EV understand that this SCOTUS decision has a profound impact on many people's lives and is likely stirring a variety of reactions and emotions, from stress, worry, despair, anger, denial - just to name a few. We encourage you to honor and care for your emotions and your needs in the days and weeks ahead, and to trust your intuition about your capacity. Tap-in or tap-out as often as you need - the fight will always be here. This ruling will have a devastating effect on the physical and mental health, livelihoods, and overall well-being of people who can become pregnant, including transgender men and nonbinary people throughout the country. Many people already experience barriers to accessible and affirming abortion care, and these barriers most acutely affect Black and Indigenous people, LGBTQ+ people, and those with limited financial resources. Striking down abortion protections will only widen gaps in access to care, and will undeniably put lives at risk. This assault on bodily autonomy and privacy is mirrored in the legislative attacks we are seeing on transgender and nonbinary people in state legislatures across the country, including in Virginia. These issues are intertwined, and we must include both in our fight for liberation. We refuse to go back, and we won’t back down. |
