Dear John,

Earlier today, the Trump Court overruled Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey –– decisions that had been the law of the land for decades. Why? Because the conservative justices believe that someone other than a pregnant person has a right to determine whether a pregnancy is carried to term.  

Dobbs is a painfully patriarchal decision — and exactly the kind of analysis that Justice Ginsburg spent her entire career opposing, undermining, and eventually overcoming. Today’s ruling simultaneously insults her courageous legacy, our constitutional system, and basic human dignity. 

We have a duty — to Justice Ginsburg, to the Constitution, and to each other — to fight back! 

Alliance for Justice and AFJ Action Campaign will be pushing the President and Senate Democrats to fill every one of the 120 judicial vacancies. Judges matter. It was lower court judges who started us on this path to overruling Roe and Casey. Going forward, it will be judges at all levels who can resist Dobbs’ dangerous effects and implications! 

We must also channel our rage at this illegitimate ruling into demanding reform.

Here’s what you can do: 

• Call your Senators at (202) 224-3121 and tell them to abolish the filibuster to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) and take back our courts by filling every vacancy by 2023 and expanding the Supreme Court. 
• Turn out to the U.S. Supreme Court or a local event near you this evening. See events at map.wewontgoback.com. 
• Donate to your local abortion fund. Abortion funds are now the first line of defense for those in need. Find your local abortion fund here.

Make no mistake: This is the result of Republicans’ decades-long fight to install hyper-partisan judges on every level of our courts. Unfortunately, this is not the end. Justice Thomas has already announced that they should reconsider Griswold (contraception), Lawrence (fundamental LGBTQI+ equality), and Obergefell (marriage equality). We must do everything in our power to hold the line. Because if we fail, nothing will be left.
