From the Desk of Congressman Tom O'Halleran:
Team, by now, you’ve heard the news: The Supreme Court just overturned decades of precedent and struck down Roe v. Wade.
Let me be clear: I strongly support the right to choose. Overturning Roe immediately threatens every Arizona woman’s right to make decisions about her health and future.
Here in Arizona, there is still an abortion ban on the books, which means effective immediately, the right to access abortion may be restricted. It remains unclear how, when or if that will be enforced, but I’m working with my team to protect the rights of Arizona women.
This decision will disproportionately impact the most vulnerable. Poor women, abused women, victims of rape or incest, and mothers who are already struggling.
The Supreme Court’s duty is to uphold and defend our freedom and respect legal precedent. This decision flies in the face of that duty. The Supreme Court, Congress, and the Arizona state government have failed, and we must do better.
I was proud to co-sponsor and vote to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, which passed the House and would codify Roe, but the Senate failed to do the same. This is an inflection point. We must renew calls for the Senate to immediately take up and pass this critical legislation to protect this fundamental right.
Look team, there is still a lot we don’t know, but one thing I’m sure of is that Arizona women need our help. I encourage you to support resources and organizations in your community advocating for safe and affordable reproductive health care access.
In solidarity,
Tom
P.S. Planned Parenthood has been preparing for this unfortunate outcome and has resources ready for Arizonans who need to access reproductive health care.
