John,
Less than a day after the Senate passed historic legislation, the House followed suit. Now, the most comprehensive set of gun violence prevention policies in 30 years will go to the President’s desk for signature.
I sat in the Senate gallery last night and cried tears of joy as I witnessed 65 Senators cast bipartisan votes in favor of firearms policies that will save lives. This is a pivotal moment.
We know this bill won’t solve gun violence on it’s own, but it marks a new day for our movement. This is the first step toward a changed country – a new era in the fight to prevent gun violence and save lives. Our lawmakers finally found the strength to stand up to the gun lobby and vote in the interest of American lives: the first step in the passage of gun violence prevention legislation that will save lives.
We deserve to celebrate this victory, it’s come because we turned our outrage into action and have pushed our lawmakers toward change – but we can’t stop our fight now. In fact, we have to keep pushing harder than ever, particularly after a Supreme Court ruling that threatens existing gun laws as we know them.
I’m so grateful for all of our grassroots activists and survivors who continue to show up and I am counting on all of us to continue to. The fight is far from over, but our movement is stronger than ever.
Onward.
