John, today is a disastrous day for women, for civil rights, and for the future of our country on many, many levels.
It’s devastating.
The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, just overturned Roe v. Wade.
The decision now gives each state the right to ban abortions.
Dozens of conservative led states are now expected to ban them as early as this afternoon.
This first thing I thought of is who would be hurt first: Black and brown communities whose access to abortion and reproductive services was already difficult.
Now, with the South becoming a virtual desert for abortion, to get an abortion, you would have to travel hundreds, even THOUSANDS of miles.
Some folks can’t take days off of work to travel that far, or have the money to pay to afford the journey or procedure.
Tens of millions of people are going to be put in harm’s way as a direct result of this disastrous Supreme Court ruling.
To be clear, this will not stop abortions, it will only make them inaccessible and DANGEROUS.
This decision, because of this extreme right, conservative court, will turn back the progress we have made in this country for the past 50 years.
Looking ahead, It’s going to be DAs who are the first line of defense in this fight — and progressive District Attorneys and Attorney Generals are already fighting back.
Real Justice PAC has helped elect 24 DAs who have pledged to refuse to prosecute abortion cases in their jurisdictions. And a few of them are under attack, including Joe Gonzales and John Creuzot in Texas, who have tough elections against Republicans in November.
We need your help to grow the number of DAs who will join them in that pledge. Please, make a donation right now to help protect our current pro-choice DAs from right-wing attacks, but elect even more of them to uphold abortion rights in this country.
