Today a radical conservative majority on the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and dismantled a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions. There’s a lot to be angry about, friends. And I am really angry. This decision has immediately triggered extreme abortion bans in Republican-led states, and many more are expected to follow. Republicans have been plotting for this moment for decades. Now that it’s here, they have every intention of passing and implementing laws that ban abortions without any exceptions for incest, rape, or the life of the woman. And some are even working to put women and doctors in jail for seeking or performing abortions — like the law we fought hard to overturn in New Mexico. But we will not let Republicans and their handpicked, radical conservative majority of the Supreme Court win. There’s a lot of work ahead. I will continue the fight, alongside Senate Democrats, to protect the right to choose and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act. I will work in my home state to build out the resources that will be needed to provide safe healthcare to women who soon will not be able to in their home states. Here’s where I need your help — we need to shape the makeup of the Senate so it responds to you, protects your rights, and delivers the corrective legislation that is now urgently needed to keep politicians out of a woman’s healthcare decisions. Then, make your voice heard in elections up and down the ballot. Your vote and your engagement in our elections will make all the difference. Thank you for joining this fight. I know this is a hard and difficult day — but I have seen the powerful impact we can have when we unite behind our shared values. — Martin |
