Memorial Service To Honor Two El Monte Officers Killed In Line Of Duty
Two El Monte Police Department Officers killed in the line of duty will be remembered next week at a memorial service. The service for Sgt. Michael Paredes, 42, and Officer Joseph Santana, 31, will be at 10 a.m. June 30 at Toyota Arena. The event will be closed to the public and media, but is expected to be live streamed. Paredes and Santana were fatally shot June 14 when they entered a motel room to confront a suspect in a reported stabbing. The suspect ran from the room after the shooting and exchanged gunfire with at least one other officer in a parking lot. He died at the scene of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office. Paredes and Santana were both shot in the head, according to the coroner's office. They were taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where they died. Paredes was a corporal at the time of the shooting, but he was posthumously promoted to sergeant. Both officers lived in Upland but were raised in El Monte, and both were married fathers with children.

Report: George Gascón Adviser Backed BLM Riots, Helped Release Murderer Who Was Arrested Again
Alisa Blair, Special Advisor to L.A. District Attorney George Gascón, reportedly pushed for a double murderer to be tried as a juvenile, leading to his early release, whereupon he was arrested in connection with a new killing, according to Bill Melugin of Fox News. Fox News reported Wednesday: Victor Bibiano, 30, served eight years out of a life sentence handed down for a double murder because Gascon’s office declined to transfer the case from juvenile to adult court, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. He was recently taken into custody in May in relation to the killing of Mario Rodriguez, 40, who was found shot at a transient encampment in Pacoima, which is an area of Los Angeles. According to the report, Alysa [sic] Blair, a special assistant to Gascon who was previously at the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s office, was over Bibiano’s case and told the juvenile court judge that the District Attorney would not participate in his transfer hearing, according to Kathy Cady, who is a representative for a family of one of the murder victims. Gascón, who was elected in 2020 with the help of millions of dollars in spending by left-wing billionaire George Soros, adopted a number of “reform” policies upon taking office, including refusing to try juveniles as adults. He relaxed that policy somewhat after public outrage at the juvenile sentence given to a violent sex offender, Hannah Tubbs, who was 26 when convicted. Tubbs was later arrested for an earlier murder in Kern County, California.

Recall Gascon Campaign Forced To Evacuate LA Office Over Suspicious White Powder In Envelope
The group advocating for a recall election of liberal Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon was forced to evacuate their office on Thursday after receiving a suspicious-looking white powder inside an envelope. The envelope, which had swastikas on it, was filled with a white powdery substance, forcing the Los Angeles Police Department, LADF Hazmat and the bomb squad to respond. The group from Recall Gascon’s Los Angeles headquarters was also being tested to make sure they hadn’t been exposed to anything hazardous. Authorities later determined the substance to be baking soda. The group told FOX 11 Los Angeles they receive a lot of hate mail at their office. Gascon has been criticized in L.A. for his progressive policies that some claim are too lenient on offenders and protect criminals over victims. His policies were most recently in the spotlight earlier this month when two El Monte police officers were killed by a man who was on probation after receiving a lenient sentencing due to a plea deal over a gun offense.

Hollywood Double Homicide Suspect Arrested In Hesperia: LAPD
A man who was wanted in connection with a double fatal shooting in Hollywood last week was arrested in Hesperia Wednesday, police said. Marvin Francell Williams, 32, allegedly shot and killed 35-year-old Nadia Campbell of Hollywood and 40-year-old Ajani Patridge in the 6100 block of Carlos Avenue on June 16. Campbell’s three young children were in a nearby vehicle when the shooting occurred, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Authorities said Williams and Campbell were in a dating relationship when the killings occurred and indicated the crime involved domestic violence. Williams, who is from the Compton area, was identified as the suspect in the incident Tuesday. He was found the next day along the 13700 block of Adams Street in the Oak Hills area of Hesperia. He was seen leaving the location and getting into the back of a vehicle that was eventually stopped by a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department fugitive task force. Williams was taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to LAPD’s Olympic community police station and was booked for the outstanding no bail murder warrant, police said.

Man Fatally Shot In Hollywood; Gunman Remains At Large
Los Angeles police are searching for a suspect who they say fatally shot a man during an argument in Hollywood on Wednesday evening. The shooter fired multiple times at the victim during a confrontation about 7 p.m., according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Lizabeth Lomeli. The victim attempted to flee the area in a car, but crashed into a parked vehicle near Argyle and Selma avenues, she said. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to authorities. The suspect was wearing a black shirt and shorts and fled the scene in a white Mercedes-Benz, police told KTLA-TV Channel 5. The victim was described as 20 to 30 years old. His identity was not released. The shooting comes less than a week after a gunman killed two people in the same neighborhood. Marvin Francell Williams, 32, of Compton was arrested Wednesday in the deaths of Nadia Campbell, 35, and Ajani Patridge, 40, authorities said.

At Least 1 Person Injured After Violent Hit-and-Run Crash In North Hills
Police are investigating a violent hit-and-run crash in a San Fernando Valley neighborhood. It happened in North Hills near the intersection of Nordhoff Street and Burnet Avenue Thursday night. Witnesses say one of the drivers ran away from the crash scene and left behind another driver injured. Paramedics took that injured person to a nearby trauma center in an unknown condition. The crash also resulted in a fire hydrant being sheared off and sending a huge geyser of water into the air. One of the vehicles jumped a curb, skidded down the sidewalk and slammed into a fence at a very large apartment complex, according to investigators. Many people in the neighborhood came out to take a look at all the damage. The search for the driver who ran away is ongoing.

LAPD: Motorist Taken Into Custody Following OIS, Barricade
A man was taken into custody Thursday after barricading himself in a West Adams-area residence following a traffic stop in which Los Angeles police fired but did not hit him. The incident began about 12:30 a.m., when officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 3700 block of Exposition Boulevard, said Officer Tony Im of the Los Angeles Police Department. When the driver got out of the vehicle, an officer-involved shooting occurred, and the man ran inside a residence, Im said. “The suspect was not hit by gunfire,” Im said. “There is no evidence the officers were fired upon.” Other details of the OIS were not being released, and the investigation was continuing, Im said. A standoff ensued, and the man came out about an hour later and was taken into custody, Im said. Police did not release the man’s name or information on what he would be booked for.

Witnesses Drag Feet At Trial Of Nipsey Hussle Shooter
A judge issued a warrant Thursday for an eyewitness to the shooting death of rapper Nipsey Hussle for failing to appear to testify at the trial of the man charged in the slaying, and in his absence a police detective testified on the reluctance of witnesses that has marked the case. Evan “Rimpau” MacKenzie, a close friend of Hussle's who was a pallbearer at his funeral and was standing next to him when he was shot, has repeatedly ignored subpoenas ordering him to appear and testify for the prosecution, resulting in Judge H. Clay Jacke II issuing the bench warrant with $500,000 bail. “Mr. Mackenzie, did he express a reluctance to testify?” Aaron Jansen, attorney for defendant Eric Holder, asked Los Angeles police Detective Cedric Washington, who answered that MacKenzie had said as much in phone conversations. The taboo against “snitching” has pervaded every part of the trial of Holder, who is charged with first-degree murder in the 2019 death of Hussle and with attempted murder because two bystanders were struck with gunfire. It was a conversation between Holder and Hussle on the subject — in which Hussle told Holder there were rumors of “paperwork” suggesting he'd been talking to authorities — that prosecutors peg as Holder's motive for returning minutes later to gun Hussle down.

The California Highway Patrol is asking the public to be on the lookout for a missing woman who is considered to be at-risk. They have issued a Silver Alert for 71-year-old Rosalie Herrera. She was last seen in Wilmington at around 4 p.m. Wednesday wearing a red USC sweatshirt and blue Dodgers cap. She's five feet six inches tall and weighs about 120 pounds. Herrera may be driving a 2004 black Toyota Avalon, with California license plate: 5FFE741. Anyone who sees her should call 911 immediately.

They Didn’t Get Their Security Deposits Back. Now A Big L.A. Landlord Agrees To Pay $12.5 Million
Prominent Los Angeles landlord Geoffrey Palmer has agreed to pay $12.5 million to settle a class-action lawsuit accusing his company of withholding security deposits from more than 19,000 tenants when they moved out of his apartment complexes. The proposed settlement, which goes before Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Elihu M. Berle on July 18 for preliminary approval, could mark the end of a four-year legal battle that has pitted tenants against Palmer’s company, GHP Management Corp. Court documents alleged the company — a subsidiary of G.H. Palmer Associates, one of the largest landlords in Southern California, with more than 15,000 apartments in 23 Southern California complexes — withheld security deposits for years from thousands of tenants by charging repair and cleaning fees without properly notifying residents. California civil code dictates that landlords must disclose all repair and cleaning charges, as well as provide tenants with bills and invoices. Court documents allege that the company failed to send those notices, and in some cases, duplicated invoices to make it seem as if more were delivered than actually were.

Doctor Punched By Homeless Man Outside A Pasadena Hospital
A doctor was attacked in broad daylight in front of a Pasadena hospital. The unprovoked attack happened on May 26 a little before noon in the 600 block of South Fair Oaks Avenue. In the video obtained by FOX 11, you can see Dr. Ana Grace waiting to cross the street when suddenly a man approaches her and makes a threatening move. The attack left Grace with a broke nose in addition to other injuries after falling to the ground. "My entire body went down like a watermelon," Grace said. "I remember my head crashing into the cement and then realizing that I would not be able to defend myself." The LA County-based doctor said the incident left her concerned about the safety in the area. "The violent crimes are becoming rampant in Los Angeles. My concern is that people are not safe here anymore. I think that the justice system is allowing violent criminals out who are committing assaults that are very harmful to people, and then those people are not jailed or put in prison until either there is a death," Grace said. The suspect, later identified by the Pasadena Police Department as 23-year-old Justus Trivion, screamed obscenities prior to the attack. Trivion was later arrested by police.

Police: Suspect Smuggled Gun Into Jail Before Killing Arkansas Detention Officer
A man being booked into a central Arkansas jail on drug charges pulled out a gun and fatally shot a guard before someone disarmed him, authorities said Thursday. Jeremiah Story, a 21-year-old detention officer at the Perry County jail in Perryville, about 35 miles (56 kilometers) northwest of Little Rock, died at a hospital early Thursday, the State Police said in a news release. Roderick Lewis, 37, shot Story in a bathroom late Wednesday night while Lewis was changing out of civilian clothes and into jail issued attire, said the State Police, which was asked to investigate by the county sheriff's office. A State Police spokesman said Lewis used a gun he had with him when he entered the jail. Lewis was charged with capital murder Thursday afternoon in Story's death. It was not clear Thursday afternoon if Lewis has an attorney representing him. Lewis, of North Little Rock, was arrested earlier Wednesday evening and was being detained on drug and drug paraphernalia charges. A witness to the shooting was able to disarm Lewis, who was later transferred to the Faulkner County Detention Center in Conway, police said.

Police: 3 Cops Injured After Driver ‘Deliberately Swerves' Into Patrol Car
Three Rialto police officers were injured after a man drove his car into a patrol car helping out with a previous wreck and then sparred with additional arresting officers, police said Thursday, June 23. The incident unfolded on Wednesday, June 22, after officers responded to a car that struck a telephone in the 3300 block of North Riverside Avenue driven by a mother with her two children, the Rialto Police Department said in a news release. At 12:08 p.m., the officers were inside their patrol car completing paperwork when their driver-side door was struck by another car, causing the airbags to deploy and trapping the officers inside, police said. The driver, identified as 23-year-old David Lawrence Cordova III of Colton, was driving a black Nissan Sentra north on Riverside Avenue when he struck the officers' car, which was facing north with its emergency lights activated, authorities said. Witnesses at the scene said Cordova appeared to "deliberately swerve" at and "ram" the officers' car, according to police. Cordova then got out of his car and "acted erratically," the Police Department said. Responding officers found Cordova in the middle of the street, yelling incoherently and showing signs of being under the influence of narcotics, police said.

Brush Fire In Sylmar Singes 25 Acres, Burns Close To Homes
A brush fire that broke out Thursday afternoon threatened homes in Sylmar before officials got it under control. More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze — which appeared to be burning in a mostly vacant field that was surrounded by homes — over the course of about 90 minutes. The fire was reported around 2 p.m. in the 15200 block of West Lakeside Street, fire officials said. Its spread was stopped at around 25 acres by 3:35 p.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department said. “Firefighters assigned to structure protection defended homes on several sides of the fire, while air and ground crews made direct attacks on the flames to snuff out this fire in one hour and 40 minutes,” the department said. No injuries or damaged structures were reported. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Los Angeles County Reports 14 Total Probable Cases Of Monkeypox
As the number of monkeypox infections continues to rise across the U.S., Los Angeles County public health officials on Thursday reported 14 total probable cases in the region. L.A. County confirmed its first presumptive case of monkeypox on June 2 after an adult county resident traveled, and had a known close contact to a case. The L.A. County Public Health Department continues to investigate and conduct contact tracing -- monitoring and coordinating post-exposure prevention for close contacts as needed. Public health officials say the risk of monkeypox in the general population remains low "based on the information available." Since May, cases of monkeypox have been reported to the World Health Organization from 12 member states. The CDC issued a health advisory on May 20 after a confirmed case of monkeypox in Massachusetts, as well as multiple clusters of infections in other countries that don't usually have monkeypox cases.

COVID-19 Hospitalization Rate Slows, Pushing Back Estimated Return Date Of Indoor Mask Mandate
Angelenos may just miss the looming reinstatement of the indoor mask requirement as Los Angeles County coronavirus numbers have begun to trend in the right direction. As cases continued to climb from week-to-week, Department of Public Health director Barbara Ferrer warned of the potential return back on June 3, as Los Angeles County was moved from a low to medium classification by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The county was projected to move into the high tier by the end of the month, or at least by early July, but with what appears to be a slowing pace, Dr. Paul Simon, Chief Science Officer at the County Department ofPublic Health, predicts that move may not happen until mid-to-late July, or at all. According to Simon, the current seven-day average shows 84 patients admitted on a daily basis, a small jump from last week's 83, but the brief plateau in hospital admission rates, which sat at 7.3 patients per 100,000 residents over two weeks, is a move in the right direction.

LA Council Panel Backs Ban On Homeless Encampments Near Schools
A Los Angeles City Council committee today approved an amendment to the city's sweeping law regulating locations of homeless encampments that would bar them within 500 feet of all schools. The amendment, which still needs the approval of the full council, would update Municipal Code 41.18, which prohibits sitting, sleeping, lying or otherwise obstructing the public right of way in several areas of the city. Those areas include within two feet of any fire hydrant or fire plug; within five feet of any operational or utilizable entrance or exit; within 10 feet of a loading dock or driveway; in a manner that interferes with any activity for which the city has issued a permit or restricts accessible passage as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act; or anywhere within a street, including bike paths. The law already protects the public right of way within 500 feet of a "sensitive'' facility such as schools, day care facilities, parks and libraries, but only if each specific location is designated by the council for enforcement. The amendment approved Thursday by the council's Homelessness and Poverty Committee would be a blanket ban on encampments within 500 feet of all schools.
