Earlier today six members of the highest Court of our land decided to strip away a woman's right to reproductive freedom at a moment when it is under historic attack in Republican controlled states across our country! This outrageous decision from the right-wing packed Supreme Court will deny millions of American women their well established Constitutional rights and overturns decades of established legal precedent under Roe v Wade that guarantees women the right to chose their own destiny.

This was an ideological, results driven ruling — not a rule of law decision. And it will do permanent damage to the legitimacy of the Supreme Court. But for now, we must take this question of liberty to the people. Americans don’t want state elected officials dictating their most personal, private decisions. Many states have laws in place that, with this decision, will immediately ban abortion, even in cases of rape or incest. Lives will be put at risk — particularly the lives of those in the most difficult situations.

And make no mistake: knocking down Roe is just STEP ONE of the extremist right-wing plan for America. STEP TWO is to elect a Congress that will pass a national law outlawing abortion. That law would override state laws, like the one we have here in Maryland, that protect the right to choose within our state lines.

That’s why the 2022 elections are of paramount importance. We need to elect a Congress that will enact the Women’s Health Protection Act, a national law to codify Roe v. Wade in federal statute. That's the only way to protect reproductive freedom nationwide and stop Republicans from writing their own Handmaid’s Tale for our country.

We know Americans are overwhelmingly on the side of reproductive freedom. We must get out the vote this November to protect it!

We've been through a lot. But this is a clarion Call to Action.
