Today, the Supreme Court ruled that Americans do not have constitutional right to abortion, effectively overturning Roe v. Wade. To be clear, a majority of Americans support the right to an abortion.
The average person who gets an abortion in America is a mom. As Sarah Aswell wrote for Scary Mommy when an initial draft of this decision leaked in early May: “ Six in ten women who have abortions already have children — and half of those women have more than one kid. These are women who well-understand the responsibility and resources that go into having a child, and who know what’s best for her and her family. A full one out of three women who seek an abortion say that it’s so they can take better care of the children they already have.”
The Supreme Court’s decision to vaporize the right to an abortion will have a devastating effect on people who are pregnant – both those who want to be, and those who don’t. It’ll make things worse for rape victims and those who suffer miscarriages, as well as ectopic pregnancies and other life-threatening conditions. It will fall heavily on parents who simply cannot afford another child and can’t afford the cost of traveling to a state where abortion remains legal – which is all too many in a country as rich as America.
Not that the Supreme Court appears to care.
