Team,
Today, the Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade, eliminating Americans’ constitutional right to decide if and when they want to have children.
This is a tragic day! The ruling is a direct assault on freedom and one’s own right to bodily autonomy. Millions of people across our country will be deeply, deeply affected by today’s Supreme Court decision.
The ruling also further splinters an already divided country, one side that respects a person’s right to make their own medical decisions, and one in which many Americans will be forced to make decisions they are not ready for.
And let’s be clear who this will have the biggest impact on: Low-income Americans without the financial means to travel to another state to get the medical treatment they need will be forced to have children they are not ready for.
People with financial means will always have the resources to go wherever they choose to get the medical treatment they need. It is those without resources who will suffer the most.
But as devastating as today is, we must remember that we cannot stop fighting.
We must pick ourselves back up, we must continue to stand up to the far-right, we must continue fighting for our constitutional rights. This year, House Democrats passed a bill to make the right to an abortion law; we need a larger majority of Democrats in the Senate to make this law and counteract this horrendous ruling. This November, we must show up to the polls and let Republicans know that our voices will be heard.
I am committed to defending and expanding our majority. Every day, I will be out there supporting our Democratic frontline and ensuring that this fall, we do not let Trump, Mitch McConnell, Kevin McCarthy, and the rest of their cronies continue their assault on our constitutional rights.
Friends, I promise you, we will not be silenced.
