Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in our case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, and overturned Roe v. Wade. For the first time in history, the Court has taken away a fundamental right.
This is a devastating blow for our right to access abortion in the U.S. and marks a dark day for a Supreme Court gone rogue, trampling 50 years of precedent.
This decision is wrong, and we must not stay silent.
I'd like you to see my full statement below:
“The Court’s opinion delivers a wrecking ball to the constitutional right to abortion, destroying the protections of Roe v. Wade, and utterly disregarding the one in four women in America who make the decision to end a pregnancy.
While public support for access to abortion is at an all-time high, the Court has hit a new low by taking away – for the first time ever – a constitutionally guaranteed personal liberty.
Utter chaos lies ahead, as some states race to the bottom with criminal abortion bans, forcing people to travel across multiple state lines and, for those without means to travel, carry their pregnancies to term — dictating their health, lives, and futures. Today’s decision will ignite a public health emergency.
One day, the regressive and cruel Dobbs decision will be reversed for its brazen disregard for the rights of women and the rule of law. Until then, we will use every legal lever to ensure that every person’s right to make decisions about their body and their lives is realized, and that they have access to the full range of reproductive healthcare.”
Now, more than ever, we need to mobilize to build, enforce, and defend legal protections for reproductive rights. A generous Center donor has pledged to match every dollar received today, TEN to ONE, up to $50,000. Please
make an urgently needed gift to the Center for Reproductive Rights before MIDNIGHT to further your impact, and it will be matched TEN TO ONE, up to $50,000, to fight back.
Today’s decision leaves millions of people across the country struggling to access the essential health care they need, and deprives them of the right to make their own decisions about their lives and futures. The impacts will fall hardest on those who already face discriminatory obstacles to health care, particularly Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, people with disabilities, people in rural areas, young people, and those having difficulty making ends meet.
Today, your support has never mattered more.
Stand with us in this pivotal moment by making a gift of $35 or more by MIDNIGHT and your contribution will be MATCHED TEN TO ONE to defend reproductive rights for all.
In solidarity,
Nancy Northup
