Hi friend,

Last week the California Legislature passed a $300 billion state budget. That budget includes $21 billion for climate and energy funding but lacks details about how the money will be allocated and even whether it is one-time funding or funded over multiple years!

Either way, this budget is a good start, but we need more clarity — and we need more money.

California has a record budget surplus of $97.5 billion. Money isn’t the issue; we need our leaders in Sacramento to show the political courage to make an investment in climate that matches the scale of the climate crisis.

Please send an email reminding Governor Newsom that it’s fire and drought season, and we need a bigger climate investment in the budget.

Voters deserve clarity on this climate budget and big numbers that are being voted on, friend. Double counting previous year’s climate investments, or counting more fossil fuel extraction, is smoke and mirrors, not climate courage.

$21 billion is only historic compared to past investments that have failed us. This investment is not enough to ensure victory against worsening droughts, extreme heat, and wildfires year after year.

As we get closer to the worst of California’s wildfire and drought season, the Legislature and Governor must stop kicking the can down the road. We need a multi-year plan that truly prioritizes climate justice investments in California’s spending.

Friend, will you reach out to Governor Newsom and ask him to double down on climate in the state budget and make sure that money is spent on infrastructures that actually makes an impact in the climate crisis?

Thanks for acting on this.
