Loss of Abortion Rights Will Send Shockwaves Through the U.S. Health Care System

The Supreme Court’s decision today overturning Roe v. Wade will send shockwaves through American health care. Our health care system already frequently fails women of reproductive age — especially those in racial or ethnic minorities — who are more likely than women in other high-income countries to die of preventable causes, including complications from pregnancy.


On To the Point, Commonwealth Fund President David Blumenthal, M.D., and Vice President Laurie Zephyrin, M.D., discuss how this decision will reduce access to care and deepen inequities. The Commonwealth Fund is focusing on assessing the immediate impact of abortion restrictions on access to care — with a special emphasis on people of color, poor people, and those in rural communities — and on helping the health care system adapt to ensure women’s health and to raising the voices of those affected by the changes.
