Dear Friend,

As you may have heard, the Supreme Court just voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, the case that has protected a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions for decades.

I am furious. In this one decision, the Supreme Court has gutted decades of precedent in a decision that is out of touch with the majority of Americans and the needs of our communities.

I want you to know two things:

  1. I will never stop fighting to protect our fundamental rights. I am a proud co-sponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act—which would codify Roe in statute to ensure no court can strip away our basic human rights to control our own bodies and destinies—and which we passed in the House several months ago.  We are still fighting to get this bill passed in the Senate and I am calling on my colleagues to urgently take another vote to break the filibuster and pass this legislation immediately.
  2. Access to abortion care is still legal and available in New Mexico. In 2021 our state voted to repeal an antiquated and dormant abortion ban, which I was proud to vote for in the State Legislature and which many fought to repeal for years. If you need care, please consult with your healthcare provider.
While this decision comes as a devastating blow to generations of women and activists who have fought to protect our basic rights—we must turn our anger into action. I will be fighting every day in Congress and in our community to ensure we protect our right to make our own decisions and control our own bodies—which are not only a Constitutional right, but a human right.

Yours in solidarity,

Melanie
