Friends,
While it may have been expected, today’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and end the constitutional right to abortion is a visceral gut punch for me, and I’m sure for so many of you as well.
I was a college student when I first protested for abortion rights outside the Capitol nearly thirty years ago. I’m so grateful to those of you who have been in this fight for even longer, and to those who have joined since.
At J Street, we share the pain, outrage and anger felt across the nation right now.
We share the resolve to act to defend reproductive rights, women’s rights and the freedom to choose whether and when to bring new life into this world.
We know too well the dark history we faced before the recognition of our right to control our bodies. We know we cannot return to that time.
We also know that this decision will particularly affect marginalized communities, women of color and those left behind by our economy. Together, we must stand strong to protect the rights of all those who will be impacted in states throughout our country, no matter their background.
Our community has a proud history of standing up for equality, for women’s liberty and for reproductive freedom. We will do so once again.
At J Street, we’re committed to partnering with allies in this fight. This is a vital part of our commitment to equality, justice and democratic freedoms -- and of our role as a true political home for all members of our community.
Please stay tuned for information about rallies, protests and further action we can take together in this painful and pivotal moment.
In the meantime, please consider splitting a contribution to a range of women’s rights groups and abortion access funds which need support now more than ever >>
Yours in solidarity,
Debra Shushan
Director of Policy, J Street
