Friend,
Like so many Americans, I am furious and heartbroken by the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Roe v. Wade . We are now living in a country where young girls will grow up with fewer rights than their mothers, and even in some cases, grandmothers. I refuse to accept that there is nothing that can be done to protect the Constitutional rights of women and prevent this backsliding.
It’s been almost 10 months since this radical right-wing Court allowed Texas’ extreme near-total abortion ban to take effect. We’ve seen the devastating effects that this 6-week ban has had on Texans, denying them access to needed health care and making doctors and health care providers afraid to do their jobs. And with this ruling, Gov. Abbott’s “trigger law” will make abortion ILLEGAL in Texas in just 30 days.
This ruling will take us back to a time when women couldn’t make decisions about their own bodies and will put the safety of American women in jeopardy.
Let me be clear, in addition to being extremely dangerous, this ruling is incredibly unpopular. Almost 70% of Americans oppose this decision. There are more of us who want to move our country forward than there are of them trying to take us back.
Abortion must be safe, legal, and accessible. This decision shows a blatant disregard for 50 years of settled law and the fundamental rights of women. The House has passed legislation to codify Roe ’s protections into law and the Senate must do so now as well — we are out of time.
Today is a tough day, and we can’t discount that. Take the time you may need to process this decision and the state of our country, but know this is not the final chapter of this fight. As my hero John Lewis told me, we can’t let them steal our hope.
While this decision will have profound and lasting impacts, I believe in our country and the power of ordinary citizens coming together to do extraordinary things. I know that future history books will note that this decision was a turning point when Americans of all races, creeds and political persuasions came together to affirm the equal rights of women and their ability to make the best decisions about their own bodies and futures for themselves.
I promise you I will be right alongside you in these efforts and am so grateful to have you with me, friend.
In solidarity,
Colin Allred
