The Supreme Court just overturned Roe v. Wade. At least 26 states will likely move swiftly to ban abortion following this ruling, meaning women in over half the country will no longer have power over their bodies and lives.

This ruling is a horrible tragedy for millions of women who deserve access to abortion care. Now that Roe is overturned, women in more than half the states in the country have lost their right to safe and legal abortion.

And we know this is just the beginning of attacks on reproductive rights. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell just said a ban that would make abortion illegal nationwide is "possible." That means regardless of whether you live in a blue state like Rhode Island or a red state, Republicans will work to take away access to abortion services.

I am devastated by this ruling and I will continue to fight for the right to choose – just as I've done throughout my career. As Treasurer, I worked to pass the Reproductive Privacy Act which codified Roe into Rhode Island law, and I support the Equal Access to Abortion Act because a women’s right to reproductive health care should not depend on what type of health insurance she has.

In Congress, I will fight to ensure reproductive rights are protected for all, support codifying Roe into federal law nationwide, and block states from enacting barriers to accessing abortion care.
