The Supreme Court opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has come out, and it’s what we had feared when we first heard about the leaked opinion months ago.

A conservative majority of the Supreme Court has effectively overturned Roe V. Wade, uprooting decades of precedent affirming the right to abortion. This is the greatest restriction of Americans’ rights in the last half-century.

When Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans spent years planning to pack the Supreme Court — and the entire federal judiciary — with hard-right, extremist judges, this is the outcome they were working towards.

And it’s not just on the Supreme Court - in many states, Republicans are pushing legislation that could throw women and their healthcare providers in prison.

I will continue fighting to preserve and protect women’s bodily autonomy, and the right to choose for anyone, in California and across the country. We must codify the protections under Roe v. Wade into law.

The majority of Americans are pro-choice, and it is time for Congress to get off the sidelines and protect women’s fundamental right to choose. And if we must eliminate the filibuster to do so, that is what we must do.

With our fundamental rights under attack, we must do everything in our power — including eliminating the filibuster — to protect the right to choose.
