Like many of you, I watched in horror when news broke last month that the Supreme Court was moving towards overturning Roe v. Wade.
Today's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization is an absolute disgrace, not only for its betrayal of nearly 50 years of legal precedent, but also for the irreparable and unnecessary harm it will have on women across this country .
A woman's right to choose should not be up for debate. And we will not take this attack sitting down.
A conversation on a rainy October afternoon on this very topic is what inspired me to run for office. That day, an older woman called, wanting to make sure I knew my polling place and had an early voting plan. Before she hung up, she said this to me:
“I marched in the streets for the rights that you grew up with. I need you to promise me that, no matter what happens in November, you will go out and you will keep on fighting."
I am of a generation that grew up never believing we would question Roe or roll back voting rights. But I am also of a generation that never fathomed a world in which my children would do active shooter drills in their classrooms.
I made a decision on that October afternoon that I would keep on fighting,
Today I am asking all of you to join the fight. I encourage all of you to get involved. Call your Congressperson. Attend a rally. Donate to a pro-choice group. Most importantly, make yourselves heard at the ballot box.
That is why I am running for Congress. Because now, more than ever, it is clear that we need strong women who intuitively understand the damage of these decisions representing us in Washington.
While we do not know what rights the Supreme Court will come for next, the people of NY-19 can trust I will fight for them and against the slippery slope of taking away other fundamental rights for inclusion and equality.
