Dear People For supporter, Reproductive freedom in America has been upended by the far-right majority on the Supreme Court. We’ve just lost legal protection of the fundamental right to bodily autonomy, impacting millions nationwide. Unfortunately, we saw this coming… first with the confirmation, by Mitch McConnell’s Senate, of three Donald Trump Supreme Court nominees, then with the unprecedented leak in May of Justice Alito’s draft opinion in the Dobbs case, indicating Roe v. Wade was in the Court’s sights. Now, as we mourn the loss of Roe, and stand in solidarity with people in states where abortion is now illegal or soon will be, all paths to restoring recognition of this vital constitutional (and human) right run through this November’s midterm elections. That’s why it’s never been more urgent to get out the progressive vote. And to defeat the Far Right up and down the ballot, in races for every level of government, because until we can enact federal reform, access to abortion care will be determined by state and local laws. People For is working to counter far-right voter suppression with massive voter turnout. But, to be perfectly blunt, fundraising has been very slow this year and we have a lot of ground to make up in order to fully fund this work. We know you worked so hard and gave so much to get out the vote in 2020 and then again to mobilize against attacks on our democracy in 2021. Now, fundamental rights, like the right to make our own decisions about whether to give birth, are on the ballot this November. And as a member-funded organization, we urgently need your help. Lives are at stake. They’re under threat in all the places where abortion is now prohibited and, even worse, criminalized. And if we lose this November, things will get much worse. In many places, the anti-abortion Far Right wants to charge people who have – or help others get access to – abortions with murder. And we know that the anti-abortion movement has a NATIONAL abortion ban near the top of their agenda should they retake control of Congress. So much was already on the line in the midterms this year. And, if you’ve been watching the January 6 Committee hearings you know that includes our democracy itself. Now, the right to make our own decisions about giving birth, for this generation and generations to come, is on that list as well. The ways we fix this mess and ultimately restore the RIGHT to abortion in our country all involve winning or expanding pro-reproductive rights majorities in Congress so:
Even if it takes years to replace another two Supreme Court justices, think about this: If the Far Right wins majorities in either or both chambers of Congress, they will use their power to rig the next presidential election in favor of Donald Trump or a Trump-like candidate, who would then get to nominate the next justices. And while we work toward federal relief (which can be slow, but can potentially be much quicker with big victories at the federal level in November), we need to protect the rights and access of people in the places where abortion care is now – or will soon be – illegal. Again, that means the stakes for down-ballot races in hundreds of jurisdictions across the country just got much higher. Thanks for everything you do. – Marge Baker, Executive Vice President
