| Friend, A new study shows that California's red flag law may have prevented as many as 58 mass shootings since it was initiated in 2016.(1) Red flag laws save lives. So why is the Senate considering cutting the red flag provision from the gun safety bill?(2) States that have passed ERPO laws have already proven that they work, disarming those who threatened mass shootings at schools and workplaces. We need the Senate to keep red flag provisions in the bill. Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) laws, commonly known as "red flag laws," save lives by allowing courts to temporarily remove access to firearms from people who are dangers to themselves or others. After many of the recent mass shootings, including in Buffalo and Uvalde, it was discovered that the shooters previously exhibited behaviors that would have counted as red flags. It's no-brainer legislation, and the current deal on gun safety in the Senate provides incentives for states to pass red flag laws.(3) But NRA-funded politicians are trying to stop the red flag provisions. North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer actually said, "I think we are more interested in red waves than we are in red flags quite honestly as Republicans."(4) We can't let the Senate play politics with our children's lives. We need as many people as possible to tell the Senate to include the red flag provisions in the gun safety legislation.
