The
Success of the People's Summit
The ANSWER Coalition is proud to have been a core convener of
the 2022 People's Summit for Democracy that brought together thousands
of people and over 225 organizations from across the U.S. and dozens
of countries to Los Angeles between June 8-10 to say NO to Biden's
Summit of the Americas that excluded Cuba, Venezuela, and
Nicaragua.
The voices of the excluded were present at the People's
Summit that represented the aspirations of the hundreds of millions of
people of the Americas: economic and social equality, dignity, and
peace. The convening was the embodiment of
internationalist solidarity and an essential step in the process of
building unity amongst people and social movements that oppose the
dictates of Washington and U.S. imperialism.
The spirit of the People's Summit was filled with optimism,
and an overwhelming feeling of collectivity, unity, and joy as working
class people came together and took part in panels and plenaries, art
programming and workshops, a vendors fair, nightly concerts, and
mobilizations. The People's Summit received messages of solidarity
from the Presidents of Cuba, Venezuela and the former President of
Bolivia for its principled support for the popular and progressive
movements in Latin America under constant attack by the U.S.
empire.
The movement against racism and war in the heart of
imperialism can only be viable if it is linked up with the workers
movements of the oppressed countries of the region. The People’s
Summit introduced workers movements from around the world to people's
organizations in the United States. While the People's Summit has
concluded, our search for building greater unity continues. Not Biden,
but the people of the Americas will have the last word!
