We knew this day was coming, but I’m still deeply disappointed and furious to announce that the U.S. Supreme Court just officially overturned Roe v. Wade, undoing 50 years of legal precedent and the federal right to abortion in the United States.

This is a devastating blow to the rights of millions of women across America, taking our country backward by decades and allowing Republican-controlled states to implement extreme, draconian abortion bans — even in cases of rape or threat to the mother’s life.

And NM-02’s current far-right representative, Yvette Herrell, is cheering it on. Not only does she support the conservative Court’s decision, but she’s co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act: a national abortion ban without exemptions for rape or incest that would also ban in vitro fertilization (IVF), intrauterine device (IUD) birth control, and emergency contraception.

I am a proud pro-choice Democrat endorsed by Planned Parenthood Action Fund, who believes that no politician should come between the private decisions of a woman and her doctor. Help me replace anti-choice extremist Herrell this November by rushing $10 or more to our campaign now!

When I’m elected to Congress, I’ll do everything in my power to protect the right to choose by writing reproductive rights into federal law — something Herrell voted against this spring.

Here in New Mexico, Democrats recently took action to repeal our state’s dormant 1969 statute that outlawed abortion with few exceptions, in an effort to ensure abortion would continue to be safe and legal in our state even if Roe is repealed. We stood out as one of the only states in 2021 to pass legislation supporting abortion rights, while more than 100 anti-choice laws were introduced across the country.

Now, extreme abortion bans in Republican-controlled states like neighboring Texas will go into effect, making it all the more important we protect safe, legal abortion access here in New Mexico.

NM-02 deserves a leader in Congress who defends reproductive freedom, and with Republicans only 4 seats away from taking back the House and passing a nationwide abortion ban, we NEED to flip this toss-up seat from red to blue in less than five months.
