Hi John,
I had an abortion. I work with youth activists who have had abortions. Today’s decision is devastating. But we will never let abortion access come to an end in this country.
We’ve seen this threat coming for a long time. We know that many people already faced huge barriers to abortion - especially for young, low income, BIPOC and trans and gender-expansive communities. Youth activists have been working to expand access for everyone, and they won’t stop now. They’re connecting, learning, innovating - all to make sure everyone who needs abortion can get an abortion.
✨ You can join us. Young people can sign up here to help each other access abortion as part of our Youth Abortion Support Collective (YouthASC).
I had my abortion because I wasn’t emotionally or financially ready to parent. I’m not ashamed or apologetic - my abortion helped me have the life and future that I wanted. It’s unthinkable that this right, this necessity, can be taken away. But I’m fighting back - and so are young people across the country.
The fight will be long, and it will be very difficult. We have to support and find inspiration in one another. I’m sending you love and strength today as we face this new reality together. Rest when you need to, find joy where you can, and remember above all that we will continue to support one another as we move forward in this work. Abortion access will not disappear - not today, and not ever.
What can you do today?
-
Remember that abortion is still legal in the vast majority of the country. It’s important not to spread misinformation at this crucial time. For up-to-date information about abortion policies in your state, visit Abortion Finder’s State-by-State Guides. (Although, note that this resource may be updating rapidly in the next few days and its information may change throughout today)
-
If you’re ages 14-24, join young people working to expand access in anticipation of just this moment: through abortion funds, doula training, practical support networks, clinics, pharmacies, telehealth providers, self-managed care strategies, and more. Join YouthASC here.
- If you or someone you know needs an abortion, we've compiled a list of resources at advocatesforyouth.org/abortioninfo — feel free to share far and wide.
-
Donate to an abortion fund in your community - help someone pay for the abortion they need.
- Learn about practical support options for abortion in your area.
We have many years of this fight ahead of us - let’s work alongside young people to protect our rights, our dignity, and our bodily autonomy. To protect abortion and all who need it. I hope you will join us.
In Solidarity,
Tamara Marzouk
