For the first time in American history, a Constitutional right previously recognized by the Supreme Court was rescinded. Tens of millions of women lost their bodily autonomy this morning. Now, right-wing legislators are rushing to pass laws that would make abortion illegal from the moment of conception, to criminalize miscarriage, and to outlaw birth control. All that is stopping these laws from being passed nationwide is our Democratic majorities in the House and Senate.

This decision will not stand, and will one day be relegated to the dustbin of history and remembered alongside Plessy v Ferguson and Dred Scott as the actions of reactionaries on the Supreme Court thwarting the will of the American people. I’m committed to doing whatever it takes to overturn this wretched decision and so are my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate.

The Supreme Court is fundamentally at odds with the beliefs of the majority of Americans, and not just on a woman’s right to choose, but on gun control, the environment, and so many more issues. A Supreme Court this out of step with Americans cannot be allowed to decide every public policy issue unchecked. We have to make the 2022 election a referendum on whether our country will continue to be a democracy, or whether we are a theocracy controlled by a minority of right-wing extremists.
