I’ve thought a lot about what I wanted to say now that it’s official the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade. Here’s where I landed:

Today is a tragic day. I’m outraged. And I’m terrified of what this means for so many women I love and for women across the country. This is a direct assault on millions of women’s freedom to control their own bodies.

And they aren’t going to stop there. We know what’s about to happen next - 26 states are going to quickly pass laws to criminalize abortion and some will even move to jail women and their doctors. It’s shameful.

I voted to codify Roe into law because women, not government officials or Supreme Court justices, have the right to control their own bodies. I stand behind my support of Roe with everything I’ve got.

This Supreme Court decision also means our race has taken on a new importance.

I am one of 3 Democrats standing in the way of Republicans and Kevin McCarthy taking control of Congress. If they take over, they’ve said they will criminalize abortion nationally, including here in California. We cannot let that happen.
