Team, my heart is heavy:
The Supreme Court has officially released its final decision to repeal over 50 years of protection for a person's right to privacy, choice, and reproductive freedom.
When Politico first leaked the Supreme Court's draft decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, millions of Americans were rightfully sent into a panic about what the future may hold for their health and even their lives.
Here's the hard truth: History has shown us that abortion will persist – whether it's legal or not. Overruling Roe won't end abortion. It will only end safe and legal abortion in over half of the states in our country.
Women of color, rural communities, people living paycheck to paycheck, and other marginalized people will bear the brunt of the repercussions. People will be left with no choice but to travel hundreds of miles to the nearest clinic, struggle with long wait times, and deal with financial barriers. This is the reality of a future without Roe v. Wade.
Listen, if you're feeling disheartened about the state of things, I don't blame you. But on our team, we say this: “Don’t agonize. Organize!” I want to take this opportunity to tell you that I will never stop fighting against these unjustified attacks on reproductive freedom. Congress has the power to pass legislation to protect the right to choose. I have sponsored legislation to do just that and am pushing to make it law.
The election this November couldn't be more crucial. We need to continue fighting to elect pro-choice Democratic leaders who will fight for ALL Americans.
